With over a 1000 of quality talks from all the corners of the earth, the TED conference became one of the most remarkable platforms for quality storytelling from almost all disciplines of life, including fundamental sciences, medicine, clinical psychiatry, but also photography, psychology, engineering, sports, drama, poetry. For those who never heard about TED, let me please quote the official mission statement of this non-profit organization.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Some months ago I have been given an unique and amazingly exciting opportunity, to fill into the role of TEDx speaker during a conference organized by University of Nevada State in Las Vegas, USA. I was given a life-time chance to be among so many interesting people from completely different walks of life, than mine! Participating in TEDx event as a speaker was a truly enriching experience on so many levels.
Those who know me, or who had a chance to learn about my multimedia and scientific exploits both from the web, or my behind the scenes videos, will very quickly realize my passion for public speaking and media-technology related presentations. In my TEDx talk entitled ‘Imagine Yourself and Night Photography’ I wanted to address the very popular misconception about the long exposure night techniques, as the gerne of photography that requires a special skill-set, or very sophisticated imaging equipment. If you have a moment please watch the talk and share your thoughts or comments on the Youtube channel of TED.
TEDx event however, is not only about giving an inspiring talk! It is a great chance to meet truly extraordinary individuals, driven by passion. It is an unique opportunity to observe, learn and network with a group of truly amazing people, who’s life stories, eloquence, intelligence and finally the ability to convey their message in a short yet, truly compelling story, is what every storyteller out there should be aspiring to! So… If you only have a chance to do, GO FOR IT! It is worth it! Trust me!
However every story does have far more to it than it usually meets the eye! An this is why, I want to stress something very important: My TEDx talk is not just my achievement, but an effort of a really BIG GROUP of amazing people, who worked really hard to make this event happen and looked so good!
I would really love to acknowledge:
Lumi Toma, PhD – my life- , photo- , adventure- , climbing- , hiking- , running- , partner. Oh girl! There would be no TEDx story without you! You DO complement me in so many ways! (http://www.alpine-photography.com)
Navid Saleki – an outdoor professional whom I count among my best friends. I will never forget the evening when you have planted in my head the idea of giving a TED talk! Thank you buddy!
Michael Grema – the chair of TEDx event at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA. Michael, thank you so much for reaching out to me and encouraging to apply. In very many ways the process of preparation, the adventurous travel to Las Vegas and the opportunity to meet you changed my life!
Andrea Goeglein, PhD – the heart and the soul of the organizing committee. Andrea! It was an absolute pleasure to have all these Google Hangouts with you, and more importantly meet you and see how you manage so many things at the same time! All with a smile and your face, and amazing attention to detail! You do serve the success of others! (http://www.servingsuccess.com/)
Amy Ayoub – the ‘Zen Speaker’ indeed. Amy is an amazingly warm and knowledgeable presentation coach and motivator, who worked with me, helping me out to overcome the stress related to live television speaking and refine my talk to fit to the TEDx format. Dear Amy! Your final advice: “…speak like you would be explaining your story to your buddies in a decent bar, was a game changer for me…”. I have been implementing your invaluable feedback in all my presentations, since the TEDx talk and I feel the things are going into the right direction! (http://www.thezenspeaker.com/)
University of Nevada and TED Production Team – guys, you are rock stars! In my short yet prominent media career I had a pleasure to work with nation-wide broadcasters, yet the level of organization, timing, planing you have shown during the TEDx event was, simply mind blowing! I know simple THANK YOU will not be enough! (http://tedxunlv.com/)
TEDxUNLV Speakers – I would not dare to make any favors here, as all of the talks were amazing and truly inspirational. I could only wish to repeat the event once again with the same crew and have at least equally as good time as I had by talking with you guys! (http://tedxunlv.com/)
G-Technology – Our trusted collaborators made sure my travel and accommodation in Las Vegas were top notch! Thank you so much for helping out and providing amazing networking opportunities during the Las Vegas National Broadcasters Convention 2014. As always, I had a blast! The NAB party in Mandarin Casino was simply epic! (http://www.g-technology.com/)
Valle d’Aosta – I want to extend my thanks to the Ministry of Tourism in the Autonomous Region of Aosta for facilitating our collaboration with numerous athletes, outdoor professionals and the Astronomic Observatory of Aosta. All of these projects were a source of our story and exceptional footage that was shown during the TEDx talk. The most of our commercial portfolio has been photographed in the spectacular surroundings of our home in Aosta. (http://www.lovevda.it/turismo/default_e.asp)
University of Groningen, the Netherlands – I want to greatly acknowledge my alma matter, University of Groningen, where I have spent many amazing years of my life. Working among the creative scientists from the research labs of Molecular Dynamics and Biotechnology had a great impact on me in a multitude of ways. I also want to mention a vast number of courses, which were an integral part of my scientific curriculum and helped me greatly to develop as a public speaker. Dank U well! (http://www.rug.nl)
